PENNSBURY:
Falcons take on Penn Wood in state quarters
Fresh off a thrilling buzzer-beating victory earlier in the week, the Pennsbury High School basketball team will be back in action today in the quarterfinal round of the PIAA Class AAAA State Tournament.
The opponent will be powerhouse Penn Wood, the game will be played at Villanova University and tip off time this afternoon is at 2 p.m.
Pennsbury brings a 24-5 record into this game and is hoping to advance to the state semifinals for the second straight year. Last year the Falcons fell to Chester in the semifinals in front of a packed house at the Palestra in Philadelphia.
A year ago Pennsbury also played in the state quarterfinals at the Villanova Pavilion, where it beat Ridley to advance to the Chester game.
Penn Wood brings a 25-3 record into today’s game. The Delaware County team fell to Norristown, which has since been eliminated, by the score of 52-49 in the District 1 final, but has rebounded to post two impressive state tourney wins.
In its last game, Penn Wood blasted Bartram of Philadelphia, 78-53, in a game in which standout Aaron Brown poured in 27 points and collected 14 rebounds. Tyree Johnson added 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Patriots.
Pennsbury, of course, is led the University of West Virginia signee Dalton Pepper. Pepper needs just five points to become the all-time leading scorer in the history of Lower Bucks County. The current record of 2,211 points is held by former Truman star Tyrone Lewis.
Look for Penn Wood to try to put the clamps on Pepper, something which is easier said than done.
Still, Pennsbury will need solid contributions from its excellent guard combo of Eddie DiRugeris, Jesse Krasna and Dante Devine, who sank a game-winning 3-pointer against Central Dauphin East in the round of 16 Wednesday night.
As usual, today’s game will be preceded by The Trentonian pregame show at 1:30 p.m. and broadcast live on WBCB 1490 AM at 2 p.m. Broadcasting the game and hosting the pregame show will be Vince Reed and basketball guru Dave Moyer.
